OLDER PEOPLE'S FOOD CHARTER

28.01.2009

Taylor, David

That this House endorses article 25(1) of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and recognises access to sufficient, affordable, safe and nutritious food as a human right; acknowledges the growing evidence that older people's access to food is more easily compromised than other sectors of society; is aware of the growing risk of malnutrition in an increasingly ageing population due to a wide range of factors, including lack of transport, bad weather, fuel poverty, bereavement, social exclusion, medication, illness or carer illness; strongly supports voluntary sector efforts to engage older people in planning the content of an Older People's Food Charter; welcomes the launch of a UK Older People's Food Summit with the participation of older people, leading food retailers, the NHS, local government, regulators and others; encourages older people and carers to have their say in preparing the Food Charter; and calls upon the Government to consider older people's food access issues in the formulation of policy.
